Just looking around some of our active conferences. BBS calls are
    at an all time low.

Probably a sign of the times. But considering the lack of web
privacy (Facebook selling dossiers of members, etc) the bbs might
    start making a comeback.

I've done a bunch of work on Doc's Place and invite y'all to stop
by bbs.docsplace.org. Qwk is available via web browser, and
    telnet is on port 26.

Just another day in paradise.. Laying in bed entering this
message on my smartphone. Gotta love tech when it's working
    right..

doubtful... any system that wants real ID information is subject to suspicion... many BBSes demand/want such information to cover the personal liability aspect of being responsible for what their posters write... the only saving grace for providers /might/ be LLC or similar incorporation... especially if they post that old school thing about following some law and that

I've never gotten the hang of using a phone for things like that.
My phone is mostly limited to talk and text. It has wifi so my net is free (either at home with my router or various hot spots) but the screen is a tad small (4.5") to read much of anything. And with my fat clumsy fingers forget trying to type very much. :)
But I am still amazed after all these years at people who can't go five minutes without doing something on their phones. Not talking but other things.
Is their life that so important? (Or they simply trying to impress others?)

We used to get 10-15 calls daily. This year it's dropped to 2-3.

we used to get a lot more than that... kept two lines tied up for most of the day... our human BBS callers had dropped to basically zero before we had a chance to get the BBS available over telnet... we kept the two lines going for FTN mailer calls for a while... we actually had three numbers with the third being "remote call forwarded" to the second one... when the telco started charging us for outbound services on the "remote call forwarded" number, we dropped it and the second line while filing a huge protest... "remote call forward" means that there's no line and no physical phone to be used... there was no way for us to make any outbound calls on that number... it only existed in the telco computer and was explicitly call forwarded to the second number...
when they started charging us for those services that we absolutely could not make use of (eg: long distance), the cost went from $4US a month to at least $25US or more a month... yeah, thanks but no...

On our Northeast Ohio PC Club (NEOPC) BBS we do not allow any

the proposal that any system will be able to keep encrypted

traffic. any claim that review by a sysop will even slow it
down is extremely overoptimistic. it is a trivial task to
hide anything in a message. even if you read every message
in all the echos, you cannot find all the hidden ones.
i guarantee that those that claim to remove encrypted messages
off their message base will be those most likely to have them
posted on their machine unknowingly. how many people can even
try reading all messages on their systems? not many...
i can reassure you that even those who don't have a life, it
is impossible you can review every permutation of a message.
having stated that you will review your message base for

Back in the peak of dial up days Doc's had 4 dial up lines and averaged 100+ calls daily.

When the Internet came rolling in and dial up bbs's began dropping like flies, our calls went way down. I remember dropping to a single line son afterward as we were down to virtually no calls. Old Net 3603 lost the majority of it's nodes.

I had upgraded my Wildcat software to V5 with the internet connect pack. Using a dual channel isdn line and line camping on msn network we went internet. Callers could dial in with our GUI the Wildcat navigator and surf the web. We also offered Telnet outbound to callers. But that didn't last long as calls started dropping again.

So one Friday night over a few cold beers i decided to go totally internet. Hooked up with a dynamic dns service and spammed the whole backbone with an internet bbs ad. Moderators were throwing a fit but callers from worldwide started flooding our 10 nodes via telnet downloading qwk packets, and using

I believe that covers email. We support email but do not offer it because the software (wcsmtp.exe)is old and outdated.

We also do not offer Netmail access because Platinum Express does not support it via http or telnet. Netmail will work via Santronics SX qwk mail door but nobody used it so it was disabled.

That leaves Echomail which is public. Email privacy laws do not apply to Fidonet Echomail. Some attorney could possibly challenge it, but since
echomail was here before email it should be grand fathered in. Plus SysOps don't have deep pockets.. :)

As far as site operators (webmasters sysops or domain owners)being liable for comments or articles posted by their users, that will not fly either.

    To which Drew Klenotic replies...

Actually... I've had 3 new users this week and have had a bit of activity
the past few weeks. It's died down a bit but it fluctuates. The things
    that changed?

    1) I turned off a lot of my echos (well, I moved them into a hidden area
for now so I can still monitor which may be active). I added more "local
only" areas. This was in direct response to feedback from my users and
similar sentiments from users on the more "classic" (non-PC) BBSs.

    2) Call and support other BBS's and their SysOps. I'll participate in
the conversations on these local BBS's. Eventually, on topics about
BBSing, I mention "my BBS". People ask "What BBS do you run?". New
    User.

    3) The networked areas I did keep are keeping in the theme of the BBS...
at least partially. Part of that is that the few IBM BBS's I do call?
Pretty much all the same lists of the same echos from Fidonet and the
same Othernets. Lists really too big to navigate.

    4) Advertising a BBS on a BBS seems counter intuitive. Try other
avenues. If only there were sites on the internet where people talk
about vintage computing and BBSing and may have no clue there are still
some around! And how easy it might be to reach them through SyncTerm.

It might not work for you. It might. There is a Commodore 64 BBS that I
call that sometimes has more new (local only) messages a day posted by
users than I get in my Fido feed for the echos I subscribe to.

Then again, some of us were never all that big, and a handful of callers
a day is better than weeks (or longer) without getting any.

And I agree, users who just come and play games are more than welcome. I
spent a lot more time trying to get my games running than I did on
message areas (for an old Atari ST BBS that none of the games were
written for, that was no small task).

Actually, there are a lot of Commodore BBS's. They just aren't on Fido. Though Particles is working on it so I may not be the most retro BBS on

There is a huge retro scene... I run my BBS on an Atari Mega 4 STE. I
also just set up a Carina II BBS on one of my 800XLs (actually the same
one I used to call BBSs as a kid).

    I have a huge collection of Ataris, a couple Apples (A ][e and a //c)
along with a Timex Sinclair 1500...

And next weekend I'll be adding my first Commodore 64 to the collection.

So if you're serious about the disk drive offer, I'd love to take you up
on it and I'd love my first challenge to be figuring out how to image the
disks for you so you can use them on a PC emulator. (If it's easier, you
can just drop in on the BBS or if you prefer you can email me at sysop@sfhqbbs.org)

I love my retros. I'd never even consider running a PC based BBS.

I wrote Joe a few days ago that the next time I visit my brother I could
    bring my C=64.
I could bring a 1541 FDD with me on that trip if Joe sent the FDD to You.

I also would bring the 3-1/2" 1581 drive.
I have used the MSDOS64 program to write files from a 1541 on to a 720KB
PC Formated disk on the 1581, and then place those files on my pc-compatible computer using a USB 3-1/2" FDD to do that.

I will ask in the CBM Echo if anyone knows a better (easier) way since the MSDOS64 program was written a long time ago.

Hope I can help with getting Joes SEQ text files on to his PC.

Whatever Joe decides to do is O.K. with me as I currently don't have plans
    to come to WV.
I live in Indiana, 220 miles from Huntington, not that far of a drive.
Drew, How far are You from Huntington, WV?

I had another idea, maybe we could run a Terminal Program on the C=64 and
get Joe's CBM Floppies on to his PC.
I have Bob's Term Pro for the C=64 that has a Terminal Mode.

I will play with seeing if I can do that here with my stuff.
That might do the trick. Stay tuned........
