Sounds like the "customer service" (I use the term loosely) with AT&T.
Thanks for letting everyone know.
See ya after the storms.
Pretty typical of state workers who move at their own snails pace. ==sigh=
I have generally always had good customer service with companies I've deal
with.
The only time I have a trouble is with deliveries. I have to make
arrangements with a business on the street level to accept the package since JM>building is locked and they can't get in, unless they luck out when someone JM>leaving. But that is not the fault of the company or driver.
We didn't get much here, but Florence looks to pay the Carolinas and the Delmarva a visit next week. Not good news for you.
Pretty typical of state workers who move at their own snails pace.==sigh=
I was in a State Revenue Office late one afternoon, and the employees were in LOW GEAR. But, when 4:30pm arrived, and the door was locked, it was like you flipped a switch!! They were now in OVERDRIVE, as they had
to finish taking care of everyone that was already in line, but on their own time!!
The only time I have a trouble is with deliveries.
Nowadays, folks are following the delivery trucks around, and stealing stuff as soon as it's dropped off!!
I may have noted this before, but one angry customer decided to get revenge. He got an old box, and filled it with USED kitty litter, and dirty diapers :P
We had about three inches of rain from Gordon this weekend, starting late
Saturday night and into today. Came down really good at times.
And thanks to Gordon the landlord is gonna have to do some more roof repai

When I temped at Sears in the mid '90s management called the worked "Drago

It's the same with Marshall with the state employees there. They have onl

So much for a cushy job. <g,d,r>
Plus the outer doors are locked, etc. (Used to have keys but some tenants made copies for their friends. Now everyone is issued swipe card).
One can't be too careful nowadays.
One thing I could never understand are people continuing to live on known
flood plains/prone areas. "Well, grandpa built this house" they will say. JM>would think if grandpa had much sense he would have built a little higher.
But the weather guys are not always accurate and that good soaking could j

I have drips, but a neighbour had his complete living room ceiling fall in

The landlord patched the roof and until a few rains ago things were ok.
I keep hearing things about a bad winter...we'll know for sure inabout 3 months.

Many was the time this last winter when it was so bitterly cold I thought

I spoke to her a few months ago and told her this and she just laughed. :
On the other hand, for those "wanting severe weather so bad",
Did you see the video from The Weather Channel recently of the weather

postman delivered the package or letter to the wrong house
My building has multiple boxes at the entrance in the wall.
(Picture an old movie set in NYC apartment building. Several rows and stacked. The mailman opens the top and the apartment slots drop down about six or so inches and the mail dropped in).
There was a mailman several years who just put mail in any slot. It wasn't uncommon find mail for someone else in ones box. (I remember
one time not looking closely and opened someone else's mail by mistake.
I resealed, wrote opened by mistake on the envelope and slipped it
under their door. I wondered why a bill collector was after me. <g>)
People here take the mis-delivered mail to whomever, either in

The current landlord has security cameras in all public areas,You'd probably still pass background checks... after all, you work in security.... <G>
requires background checks (good thing I was grandfathered in <g>)
The company I work for only does local background checks for new
hires. At times they would send someone to parking, with the
police department doing a different check on different state/federal level.
One time at the start of the school year we had three new
people show up. I was starting my training instructions when a LT
from the PD walked in with a clip board and called people by name,
looked over the paperwork and he asked for this one person to go with
him. I thought nothing much about it, figuring they just needed more information or something. Sometimes there were questions.
Anyway, the fella was gone a long time, I didn't want to proceed
too far along and we all took a break.
Standing around outside we saw the guy had been "cuffed and
stuffed" and in the back of a police car that was leaving.
I found out the fella had several outstanding warrants on him in
another state!
The last we heard he was a guest of the county before going back to wherever.
No one could understand, either in parking or the police
department, why someone like that would want work in security.
* Shortly after I retired I would help out here and there for
either four hours or one day. I would just wait a while to pick up my cheque, sometimes a month later.
One time I was expecting two small cheques for four hours each.
In the binder cheques are kept at this one place (where I am
working weekends now) were two cheques. I picked up both envelopes,
not paying attention, it was some days after the last payday. At the
bank I opened the envelopes and endorsed them but just before I got to
the ATM I found one was for a lot more than I was expecting then that
one was for another person! Yikes.
I called my captain, told him what I had done and returned the
cheque where that person could pick it up. I was so glad I checked the amount and noticed a different name on it. Never did that before, or since. That guy had quit and moved out of town. A new cheque was
cut and sent to him.

This building is neighbourly and we look out for each other.
There are times people will move in and out (in the front of the
building, I live in the back) and not know they were ever there.
We have four or five people (one a couple) who have lived here for
years. That goes double for the second floor. I have little idea
whose living down there and only meet them in passing as a rule.
Often when one is going to be gone for a while they'll ask someone
to keep an eye on their place.
When someone moves in the longest resident will go and say hello,
etc. I usually give them a day or so, unless I run into them. I
know how embarrassing it is for a stranger to see an apartment in a
move in mess. :)

would have the same access as the cops here.

There were two envelopes and I was expecting two cheques so in my

week off on the second second cheque. Pay usually runs a week behind.

Thirty five years ago or so I went to visit a cousin near Detroit.
I asked a elderly neighbour if she would feed my cat, twice a day.
I had all the food out so all she had to do was put fresh in the bowl, etc. When I got home after two or three days I found to my shock and horror that yes, she had fed Muffy, BUT, she hadn't emptied and cleaned the bowl each morning. The fresh half can in the morning and afternoon were dumped on top of the old. And the saucer hadn't been cleaned, but fresh milk poured on top of crusted old milk.
I thought, Well, I hadn't said anything about cleaning the bowl and saucer. But I thought she would have enough sense to do that.
Never asked her again.
She and her hubby moved a few months later.
Both are long gone by now I imagine.
True, if you run into them, you can welcome them without them having to

My place is like many older apartments in NYC, which has an air
shaft dividing one building from the other. I joke its like living in
the old lower East Side. I have three other apartments in the main
shaft in the living room. Two across and one below. (When the windows are open one can hear a lot.)
Someone moved in across from me and after a few weeks I finally went
over to introduce myself. (When the curtains are open we can see into each others apartment. Unless warm out and windows open they are kept closed.
This girl opened the door, I introduced myself and all. She said
"That's nice" and shut the door on me. :)
I figured she wasn't interested in her neighbours or thought I was
some kind of nut, or I caught her off guard, she was busy doing
something else, etc. To this day we have never spoken again. (Her
loss I tell myself). :)
Ah.... So your second check hadn't been cut yet when you grabbed the checks.... :)
Nope, I was mistaken on when that pay period ended.
The cheques are dropped off where I work so pick them up there.

then her impending death and funeral...and possibly a double one if
my brother kills himself from severe depression.
Oh dear!
That's what I'm still afraid of. Over the last month, I've had to:
1) Move back to my Mom's home from my apartment. A fellow ham radio operator and his 2 sons did it for $500. I still have a bunch of stuff
in the garage, but haven't had a chance to unpack it.
2) Make a ton of phone calls to cash in my Mom's life insurance
policies, stocks, etc. In Arkansas (and possibly elsewhere) Medicaid
"has to make you bankrupt" if you make to much to qualify for it. She basically gets too much money with her disability, her retirement, and
her late husband's 2 pensions. I'm working with Arkansas Asset
Protection Group, so I don't lose her house, her car, or my
possessions.
She is in a nursing home east of Little Rock in Lonoke,
where it's a little cheaper. In Arkansas, the average month cost of a nursing home semi-private room is $5500...and $7500 for a private room...ridiculous.
Unfortunately, because of poor documentation on a couple of large
items (including a new roof for my Mom's home), we're getting
penalized a large amount...but hopefully after all is done, my brother
and I will still get some money. But, I'll have to pay the taxes
(personal property and income for both state and federal) on my Mom, my brother, and myself.
Basically, my Mom will be broke...I'll have my Mom's car, house, and
my possessions, but no money (what I have will pay the taxes and
bills), and my brother will get his. I had hoped to take a "reward
trip" to Orlando for a big ham radio deal in early February...or even
get a Generac Generator put in at her place...but I may not get to do either of them.
But at least it's accomplished now, and everything's there now...

But, it's a little cheaper in Lonoke County, east of Pulaski County (Little Rock).
I would have thought that her money could have been used to pay her

Well, what I was to get will be used to pay the taxes...as my
brother isn't going to do it. He doesn't want to "put his big boy pants on" and take financial responsibility. He can't even balance his own checkbook. If the taxes weren't bad enough, her car needs major
work...so, I can't even afford going on "a final rewards trip for all
my stress", let alone getting a Generac Generator.
It's too bad that she has to go into the nursing home already... you
might have been able to do some of that, had things not had to be dealt
with so soon....
Well, she's 92...the dementia is real bad, and the nurses said "it's amazing it took so long to take hold".
Hope you are feeling better soon.... :)
Good that you were able to find that, then...

It came on rather suddenly. Her doctor said he would've expected it
in her 60's, not in her 90's.
Did the rest help any....?
But not enough money to be able to pay her own way at the facilities...
Well, his share would be half of what's left over after all your mom's NB>bills are paid.... Is the car still in your mom's name....?
Could it be a side effect from some medication she's taking....? Or NB>maybe a medication that has stopped working....? Either of those might NB>produce something resembling dementia.... and could have come on NB>suddenly....
Quoting Daryl Stout to Nancy Backus on 11-10-18 16:53 <=-

Not as much as I would've liked it to...it's taking a long time to
throw this head and chest cold off. I'd like to be well before I go
get my flu shot. But, at least, I haven't had to go to the doctor.
He is furious that "the financial gravy train" has dried up, but we
had no choice. My Mom had 3 credit cards...one was cancelled
yesterday, and I'll have it paid off next month. A second one will be cancelled tomorrow (she has to give her verbal consent to the people),
and I'll pay that off tomorrow (its balance was very small). However,
the third one has a large balance, because of needed repairs on my car (which I needed when my Mom's car was in the shop for repairs). So, if
I do get any money from "the trust" in March, I'll pay off the balance
of that one, and close it. I basically will "disallow any further
charges" on that last card. As Power Of Attorney, I have the right to
do that, and he can't do anything about it.
Could it be a side effect from some medication she's taking....?
Or maybe a medication that has stopped working....? Either of those
might produce something resembling dementia.... and could have come

We've wondered about that...but medical science wasn't my field.
Janice (my late wife) wanted to be a doctor...but in her words
"calculus screwed me up". :P
That's good.... and yes, it's a good idea to be well before going for

Considering that I end up paying for it.
If we get money from the "Miller Trust" in March (we'll get more if

I've mentioned it to the health care nurses at the nursing home.

Always good to be proactive from the medical standpoint. Folks don't
like to talk about those things, let alone consider them (bowel,
bladder, sex life, etc.) -- but neglecting such could cost one their life!!
He doesn't have access to the card to charge anything on it, does

Not any more. The card has been CLOSED, and his name is OFF of it
(his name was only on one of them). Yet, I still have to pay the

time.
He called last night, saying that apparently the person who did our
income taxes last year, forgot to file 2 forms for him, and now, he
has to pay far more for insurance until the Medicaid kicks in next May.
He basically has been "spoiled", and "living like a king"...with other people paying for his "treats". He obviously doesn't like being a "pauper", as I've been doing for years.

That's correct. But, I'll warn him that "once this is gone (before
our Mom dies, and even what we get after her death), there is no more". It's just like the concept of a restaurant buffet or salad bar. If no
one is there to put stuff back on it that's taken off, sooner or later, it's going to be empty. That's what a certain group of people can't
seem to understand. If demand exceeds the supply, sooner or later,
there's nothing left.
In my experience they probably can't or won't do anything about it...

Those are all part of living, and nothing to be sqeamish or prudish

It's like when I was in the E.R. once, and this woman was brought

not out here...we're taking you to labor and delivery". At that point,
you have to forget all modesty...plus, the medical professionals have

I would've thought so...but as noted, he can't balance his own
checkbook. He told me that with these finances with my Mom, "he wanted nothing to do with it". When we get the trust fund money in spring, or
the money after her death, I will divide it 50/50 -- but I will
sternly warn him that "If you blow this, it's gone...and don't come to
me begging for help, because of your irresponsibility. And, if you end
up going to jail for writing hot checks, etc., don't expect me to bail
you out". He's like in the episode of "I Dream Of Jeannie", where she couldn't understand the concept of credit cards.

I'm there.
Generally now, a woman in labor would go directly to the labor and NB>delivery area, even to be checked out to see if it was indeed labor... NB>everything planned out in advance... ;)
He'll have to figure out a way to legitimately get the funds he

Daddy always referred to ATMs as "money-trees"..... of course, he knew NB>that it really was just access to his accounts... :)

If there is funding in March from the Miller Trust, I'm going to set

I will sternly warn him that "once this is gone,
there's nothing else until after Mom is gone...but once that is gone, there is no more".
So, if he "blows it" on partying, etc., when he comes to me asking
for help...he may be my brother, but I'm going to tell him to "get
lost". I'll be 59 next year, and he's 21 months younger than me...but
it's high time he learned some financial responsibility. If he ends up
getting arrested for hot checks, etc. (one area police department makes
a ton of money off of that), I'm not going to bail him out...because
considering his past poor financial behavior, he's likely to "keep up
his mooching ways". I told him that "you can't drink or party away your
problems or your pain. You have to fight your battles yourself". Yet,
at the start of this, he told me "he wanted nothing to do with this
financial crap"...but, he wants his money.
Is he as immature in all the other areas of his life...? Maybe he
needs to be made a "ward of the state"...?
I think it's just in the economics. When he was able to work, he was
a hard worker. But, his impatience nearly killed him 3 months after my wife died, when he was involved in a freak motorcycle wreck. He's so bummed up now from the arthritis, that he can barely get around...and
the pain meds are so expensive. The sad thing is that he had no
hobbies but his motorcycle...and he was like our late father...always
had to be "on the go". He pushed the envelope limit for so many years,
and now, he's angry that he has to "pay the piper".
Daddy always referred to ATMs as "money-trees"..... of course, he knew
that it really was just access to his accounts... :)
I liked the one where this young child saw people get into an
elevator, and when the door opened, they were gone. The kid wanted to
know if they could get one of those at home, to get rid of the
annoying relatives. <G>
That would be good to at least rule that out as a possibility, and it
would need to be the doctor, I'm pretty sure....
At least I can still talk with her on her flip-phone cellphone that
I bought for her...when I can't get over there to visit. Her dementia
is real bad, but at least she still knows who I am.
And then they reap the benefits of their inaction... unless they get NB>really lucky.... :)
So you'll make sure that he pays those, by not giving him the access to NB>that part, but using "his" money to pay them... makes sense....
And perhaps he will give heed....
Is he eligible for Disability....? I can understand his being bitter NB>about losing his one hobby.... though that doesn't excuse the behaviour NB>with regard to his finances....

Too bad it doesn't really work that way.... ;)
That's a good thing... :) Another reason, btw, that it might be NB>meds-related, too.... :)

But, luck (like anything else) sooner or later, runs out.
So you'll make sure that he pays those, by not giving him the access

Exactly. I will print him an itemized statement each month, and warn
him that "once it's gone, it's gone"...and "don't come crying to me
for help if you blow it".
And perhaps he will give heed....
It's for his own good. You don't pay the power, water,
heating/cooling, garbage, and tax bills, you'll be in the dark, with
no comfort...and eventually no place to live.
Is he eligible for Disability....? I can understand his being bitter

He has been certified as disabled, but as with me, it took 6 months
before Medicare to kick in.
Seven months before Janice died, they took
away my SSI and Medicaid, saying "$1500 a month between us was too
much money"...don't get me started on that. Then, if you have to make
bank account changes, it takes 30 to 60 days to take effect...and if
the government shuts down, it takes even longer. In the meantime, you
have to keep the accounts open, and manually move the money.
That's a good thing... :) Another reason, btw, that it might be
meds-related, too.... :)
I talked to her this morning, and she said she does NOT want drugs
that make her hallucinate...and I've stressed that to them as well.
Has he been getting payments on that...? or Medicaid/Food Stamps....?
So, hopefully you won't have to make account changes... and the NB>government will behave itself..... ;)
Are they giving her any of those....? I agree she doesn't need
those.... hopefully that's not a side effect of meds she does need to be NB>taking....

He, like myself "gets too much" to qualify. Let them try surviving
on under $1000 a month.
So, hopefully you won't have to make account changes... and the

Well, I saw where they "extended the deadline" (kicking the can down
the road again) for another 2 weeks. I'm sick of the political tug of
war.

Well, she and I have told the nurses that if she's telling of side effects, she should be given something else.
As Jeff Foxworthy noted, "When I was growing up, there were only 2 medicines in the cabinet -- aspirin, and Camphopenique"...then added
"the prescription medications out there now, and the side effects are
50 times worse than what the medicine is designed to treat". Sort of
like "Side Effects May Include Death". WTH am I taking it for, then??!!

Sigh... All the more reason he needs to learn some survival skills, like NB>a better attitude towards keeping his finances properly...
It would be nice if they behaved more like responsible adults
themselves, for sure.... ;0 Threats of a government shutdown are almost NB>always rather unresponsible......
But apparently, without being much listened to... another thing that is NB>bothersome.... ;)
I remember CamphoPhenique... that was always in my parents' medicine NB>cabinet.... ;) There are some prescription meds that are called for and NB>useful... and it's possible to not get any of those dire side effects... NB>but there are certainly an awful lot of them that are rather scary....

I certainly hope that it's more like my friend's dairy farm (where one NB>doesn't smell any manure, as it's kept quite clean) and less like my NB>sister's in-laws' dairy farm, where the smell clung to her clothes and NB>her car, hours and miles away fro the farm... she and her husband lived NB>with his parents on the farm for a couple of years to help out... :)

He's like so many others, sadly. Too put it bluntly, he's lazy. So
many would prefer to live "foot loose and fancy free", and "have
others pay their bills". To me, that's a cop-out. The fellow ham radio operator, who I sold my 20 year old car to (dirt cheap), is the same
way with his brother. Except for gender, they're as different as night
and day, they don't get along, and his brother is "lazy". Even when we
get some money from the settlement in spring, I'll bet he's going to
blow through his portion...but as noted, when he comes to me asking for more, it'll be "Too bad, so sad...tough titty said the kitty when the
milk went dry".

themselves, for sure.... ;0 Threats of a government shutdown are

They're just putting it off so they don't have to take the
responsibility for it.
But apparently, without being much listened to... another thing that
is bothersome.... ;)
At least the nurses where she is don't treat her like dirt.

"Why should I take it, let alone pay the money for it??!!".

When I worked in silkscreen printing, I came home with that nasty
solvent smell of methyl-ethyl-ketone all over me and my clothes.
I likely absorbed a lot of it over the years...and combine that with
such a severe case of chicken pox when I was 20, shortly before I
married Janice, we agreed that "since they wouldn't spay her, I'd volunteer to get neutered" <G>. But, the way the world is nowadays, and the way so many kids are undisciplined, I'm glad I never had any.
We joked that "we have a son...a dachshund"...and, he was more than enough!! At least we didn't have to buy clothes for him, or take him to school!! He likely would've bitten the ankles of the obedience school instructor. :P
As noted, when I hear "Side Effects May Include Death"...I wonder
"Why should I take it, let alone pay the money for it??!!".
Part of that is simply CYA verbiage.... one could be allergic to
anything and have it be the cause of death.... and now they have to put NB>that in writing....
Had you had any, you could have raised them to be better behaved than NB>most... ;)
Just had the vet bills for him... ;)
People are so litigious nowadays that they'll sue at the drop of a
hat.
"You live under my roof, you play by my rules.
Yep. Some of the overnight vet clinics really charge a huge fee...
I've read where in the olden days people sued all the time as well.
Usually these were property disputes where person A felt their neighbour JM>persons B put a fence on person A's property by a couple of inches, etc.
"You live under my roof, you play by my rules.
Heard things like that a few times when I was growing up. :)
When Blanche was going to the vet a lot she was kept overnight a few
times and that was like $40 a night. With prices like that I wonder if JM>Blanche got a mint on her pillow? :)

Janice emphasized that she would've done likewise. A friend of mine,
twice a widow and once divorced, didn't take any crap from her kids.
When one of her sons decided to get rebellious, and said "I'll call
DHS on you", she promptly picked up the phone and dialed it for him...adding "You live under my roof, you play by my rules. If you go
to their facility, this place would be Heaven by comparison". He
quickly backed down.
Just had the vet bills for him... ;)

fee...just like the regular emergency rooms.
