The Falcon was my second car, when I got out, I think it was part
Jeep. It would go anywhere, just take it easy. Deserts, mountains in Colorado, dirt roads, etc. I was all over the country in that car.
And only one of a handful of two doors I had.
It got some electrical problem (lights would suddenly go out and
came back on again after a while, regardless of the terrain). Then the battery couldn't hold a charge (and replaced a few times) and no one
could figure out the problem.
I finally had to part with it and it was like losing a family
member, we had been through so much. Good old Red.

That's how I felt when I had to part with my Duster...

Today there are security cameras in all the public areas, the street
doors are locked and need a swipe card, etc.

Still doesn't keep things from happening, but does deter some, and
might make it easier to track culprits...

True.
Then there the dumb crooks.
For several months we had a rash of pop machine break ins on campus.
They would hit and be gone within minutes. The machines take bills
which are widely used so wasn't like they had a bag of coins to lug around. One time the guys even mugged for the camera!
They hit the building I am sometimes in on weekends and caught by
the security officer there. John, who is dead now, was in his late
60s, only about 5'5' and a gust of wind could blow him away. He caught them in the act and commanded them to hit the floor. One did but the other ran off. The first one sang like a canary and the second caught soon after. The video of them mugging for the camera was some of the
main evidence. :)

You'd think they'd've had any sense.... but they probably were just too
sure they'd never be caught... silly boys (of whatever age).... ;)

And I am sure once school starts back up in a couple of weeks I'll
be there every weekend again til May. Along with working the home
football games. ==sigh==

I could, yes. But its not advisable.
I have turned down a few posts because I have other things to do.
Just because I'm retired doesn't mean I sit staring at a wall waiting
for the phone to ring. :)

Seems to me that you are in sufficient demand that saying no every so
often won't interfere with their regular calling to see if you are
available after all, this time... ;)

This one group, at the last home game, always has a big steak
dinner and all the trimmings for me. :)

Rank (and longevity) hath its privileges... you're probably
considered one of the family... :)

They are a friendly bunch anyway. Well, save for this one woman.
The spaces are numbers and their permit is for a designated spot.
One day someone parked in this woman's space and long gone by the
time I got there. No idea who they were or anything.
This woman wanted me to have that vehicle towed since in her space.
I suggested she just move over one, which is almost always empty and
she didn't want to do that, the truck was in HER space and not moving
over one. I finally got her to move over saying if she did she would
be four feet closer to the stadium. She thought about that a moment,
then moved. A lot of security work is PR. :)

It worked... :)

One time it rained the whole time. After people leave for the game
there is always someone who stays behind to watch over the stuff.

Designated guard, eh...?

No, each tent has someone who stays with the stuff while the others
go to the game. Sometimes one person will watch two tents that are
near each other. That person will often go to the next tent and
visit, listen to the game, etc.

That's what I meant... :)

One group has wifi and a huge tv they set up in the back of their
Escalde and watch the game. All the home games are narrow cast on Facebook. And the powers that be wonder why people don't attend in bad weather. Hmm, pay a huge amount of money to sit in the cold/rain/snow
or watch it in the warmth and comfort of home for free on Facebook? Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Nothing like being there in person... especially in good weather... but
one needs must be dedicated to want to be there in foul... ;)

There are tents all over and the tables are covered.

People have learned how to be well prepared for any contingency, I'm
sure... :)

The whole area around the stadium looks like a Bedouin camp with
tents of all sizes, colours, etc everywhere. Some are open on four
sides, some three, some are completely enclosed. One group in the
higher rent district has theirs air conditioned!

Now that's luxury... ;)

The last time I got an hour ago request was on 9/11.

And that WAS a real emergency.... :)

That was really rough.
I was on 12 hour shift watching the back fence of a chemical plant,
which was closed down the first few days. I assume the plant people thought someone was going to come down the Ohio in a boat and break through. I would patrol the area and the only thing I ever saw was a beaver, a couple of deer, a cat, a couple of dogs, etc.
And being unarmed what I was to do, tell them to go away? I didn't
even have a radio and cell phones were still years away.

Other than the wondering if you needed to be there after all, sounds
relatively cushy, like most of your assignments... :) But they did want
to have someone live on the premises to watch, I'm sure... :)

The only radio I had was a small pocket one to keep up on the news.
I was there about four days and people started to calm down and go
back to normal.

I think that the wondering what was really happening and of what might
be happening was the worst part of that time period...

One thing I noticed.
One afternoon I saw the first plane since that day and it seemed so strange. We were in the glide path for the airport.

Yes... we are in the approach path and just off the takeoff paths
normally for our airport... The quiet was strange to begin with, and
then the resumption of flights was strange as well... :) I have a
friend that makes a point of flying on Sept 11 each year, just to thumb
his nose at the terrorists... and to make his point that flight is safe enough... :)

Many others think it just being disposable to be replaced on a regular basis.
My mother was attached to a '55 Mercury (a pair of his and hers) and when my
father traded of it for a newer car there were a lot of words exchanged. Mostly along the "how dare you!" type.
He was under the mistaken idea she would like a newer car as a surprise.

You know how some outside night time cameras have that sickly green tint? These see through the dark and makes midnight seem like noon.

That's what I'm afraid of. :)
I am one of the early employees of A1, don't know what number but in the single digits. I left one company to go with them when they started so I could
stay in parking. Except for one or two others I have been with them from the start.
This is move-in season on campus and I worked Tuesday and my post was near the physical plant and everyone asked "I thought you were retired?" I told them what I tell everyone that Marshall is lost without my guidance, that the parking and police departments doesn't know what to do without me, etc. (Well,
that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it!)

I have never understood that mentality either.
When I was at WVU in the mid '70s, the students (along with before and after)
when they won a big game would set old couches on fire in the street and dance around it.
They never went on a rampage of destruction through nor have we at Marshall (the instate rival of WVU).
I think the most destructive things done here are a goal post being torn down, but even that is rigged to come down safely.
I have a funny story about one time.
I was working a big championship game in the late '90s. Don't recall who were playing but it was when we had Chad Pennington, Randy Moss and a few others on the team.
I was part of the security working the south end zone, and at the time it was
just a bank of earth. (Bleachers are there now). There were about 100 security people across the field. City, county, state, Marshall police and security all mixed in together.
We were told to keep the fans off the field for five minutes after the game.
Shortly after the start of the fourth quarter people started assembling on the top of this "hill". We were so far ahead the other team didn't have a chance.
As time passed more and more people appeared until we had five to eight thousand people milling around the end zone area.
Word was passed down to hold the line for three minutes after the game.
More people showed up.
We were told to hold our positions for two minutes after the game.
There was five minutes on the clock.
More people appeared, about 10,000 now and just standing there. They looking down the embankment at us, we looking up at them.
Then ever so slowly they started moving. It seemed as if as one person was a
tiny baby step toward us and stop. Then another baby step and stop.
I was beginning to feel like Custer at the Little Big Horn.
And looking up and down the line thinking "we're gonna stop them? Yeah, right!"
The baby steps started being longer strides, and stopping.
With about 30 seconds left a football went sailing through the air over our heads landing in the McDonald's parking lot on the other side of the alley.
Then suddenly with a whoop the fans hit the field with word coming down the line, passed from person to person "run for your life, save yourself!" as we turned and were swallowed by this flood tide of humanity and in like some movie
we were literally carried away by them. There were so many if one lost the balance they wouldn't fall.
Within what seemed like two seconds I was mid field and still being pushed along.
I saw out the corner of my ear the goalpost being carried away. It looked like it was floating above the crowd, across the field and up a ramp to street level and disappeared.

Most of our cars have become part of the family... except for the '82
Aries that had problems from the beginning... we ended up calling it the grapefruit, because it wasn't quite bad enough to be called a lemon...
just close.... I was glad to replace that with my '89 Shadow... Richard
drove the Aries for another year or so before it just completely died.

on this one lot and wondered why it was day light two blocks away and we
were still in darkness. :)
I was a bit slow on the uptake that morning. :)

Reminds me of the skit where Lily "Ernestine" Tomlin is talking with
the president of General Motors (I've referenced the video
before)...with the part "Now, you know what it's like to have a
lemon...not unlike the Edsel <snort!>". <G>

We also bought a full-size van in that time period... it was a pretty
good vehicle, except for the manual transmission that was given
automatic fluid, so it ran out... had to replace that I think twice...
and the "leprosy" patches on the sides of the van.... ;)

But the '89 Shadow we bought was a sweetheart of a car... never had any
issues with it, including the turbo engine... we got over 200,000 miles
on it, and Richard kept it running after it was less reliable for my
longer trips... it was on the road for 20 years... not bad for an
American car... ;)

line a while.

He had a fatal heart attack during a race, and it was a miracle he

already set in...I think he was only 39.

I saw a T-shirt with that on it several years ago. Having worked in silkscreen printing for almost 20 years, I am always looking for neat
T-Shirts. One had a picture of an ocelot on it, and it looked like it
had been sucking on extremely tart persimmons. The caption noted:

"I have PMS and a handgun. Any questions??". <BG>

I knew several women who WANTED that shirt. :)

Chrysler got better in the '80s when Lee I-owe-you-a-coca-cola took
over. I've always been a Ford man, but have owned Chrysler and GM products. I first choice is anything by Ford with Dodge running a
close second. I won't mention what I think of GM products...

We'd always been Chrysler Corp, pretty much, although Richard's first
car was a VW bug, and we did get a used VW squareback at one time... but
it got so none of the American dealers were selling what we were looking
for, so now we have Volvos... Richard's is a '98, mine an '05... I'm not
sure if any future cars, if any, will be Volvos, though...

When I lived in Colorado Springs, CO in the mid 60s there was a
neighbour with a '58 or '59 Edsel. He spent every Saturday working on that car. Something was always going wrong.

The Shadow didn't have much wrong with it, except old age, finally... He
also had kept the grapefruit going past what it might otherwise have...

I was a bit slow on the uptake that morning. :)

And probably hit yourself on the head when it dawned on you what you
were actually seeing... ;)

I was also thinking at first, maybe it was a video from the previous
day being reviewed. Until I noticed the date/stamp on the bottom of
the screen.

That had to be a bit of a shock/surprise... ;)

I've been running behind... was away for a couple of days, and that
always does it... ;) So I sorta noticed, but hadn't worried yet...

I'm getting the basic's down.
I have noticed, maybe due to my config's, a lot of unread messages
aren't marked and have to scroll through checking dates.

Since I read offline, I've been able to just set the last read pointer
in the QWK door for an appropriate point when something happens to mess
with them...

With the old system I just marked all read (or the like) and only
messages from that date on showed up unread. Doc's does have the
"new" flag that shows up but these are checking on things I had missed when off line a while.
I'm going to mark everything previous to today as read

If you've covered the space for when you were off line, then that makes
good sense.... the older messages you'd read, presumably, in the other
system you were using... :)

So, if I haven't replied to anyone its not that I'm ignoring ya.

At least not intentionally... <G> I'll just have to go check back and
make sure you didn't miss any of my messages... I can always re-send if necessary... ;) But I think you're ok on that... ;)

One car I loved to drive was a early '70s Subaru, not much bigger than
a skateboard with an engine, but I think it ran mostly on air since I
very, very, very seldom had to put gas in it. My last car, a '70
Chrysler Newport, I had to fight it to stay on the road whenever it was a
near a gas station, it kept trying to pull up to the pumps.

now we have Volvos

I imagine those are still tough cars.
I was always partial to the 144's, that looked like '48 Fords. :)

FWIW: dynip.com is my static domain name host... it is not my system... they host thousands of static domain names and the DNS pointers to those hosts... wpusa.dynip.com is my base domain name and i have many additional (sub)domains attached to it... eg: www.wpusa.dynip.com, ftn.wpusa.dynip.com, gallery.wpusa.dynip.com, mail.wpusa.dynip.com, etc...

But at least I have a back up now.

yeah, i'm sorry about that but there wasn't much i could do... i was away when a storm came through and knocked our power out... when i returned home, the damage was already done but not yet discovered... in the morning i found that the VDSL (two bonded channels) modem was dead... that was Sunday... i called support but it wasn't until Monday or Tuesday before anyone finally decided to send me a replacement modem... then they sent the wrong one which arrived on Thursday... i called support before the FedEx guy had even gotten in his truck to leave... support transferred me to customer care and they told me they would
overnight the proper replacement modem... the cutoff time was 14:00 and it was like 13:45... i should have had the modem Friday morning or possibly Saturday but no... someone doesn't know what "overnight delivery" means so i didn't get the replacement modem until Monday morning... we were offline for 9 extremely long and boring days days...

We bought new vehicles off the lot a few times.. and ordered a few times
as well... My current car was the first one not bought as a new car... Richard's current car the first one he ever had as a new car... When we
got my Shadow, we wanted a manual transmission in a sedan (not a
coupe)... nothing like that on the lot, so we had to order it...
