I do that a lot at home.
I'll have a plastic container from whipped creme which is used for
    any number of other things.
That works, I suppose... ;) Our friend who has a sushi restaurant
uses the ketchup and mustard containers for spicy sauce and unagi
    sauce... :)

I have a five gallon pickle bucket I got 30+ years ago at a deli
they were throwing out. I use it for a number of things (mopping, cleaning, etc). Thick and sturdy.

Handy size... good that you were there at the right time to rescue
    it... :)

major street our street crosses, you could see the old rails where
they'd removed all the upper layers of the road... History was
    uncovered... ;)

Several years ago a new building was being erected on campus and
piping for gas or water or something, was being installed.
Behind the building is a brick alley (some of our streets are still brick*) and these were being taken up. About four or five feet down
they found part of a straw broom, which had to have been there since before the street was paved in the early 1900s.

    Well-preserved under it all... ;)

I was watching (it was a slow summer day in parking) and suggested
they contact the archeology department for a dig. (The land had once
been part of a vast tobacco plantation here and may have been used at
some out building). The foreman told me to keep quiet. They did that once and work was held up for months while people explored an area they were working on.

It would have made a fascinating dig, no doubt... unless all that was
left was that broom.... ;) But the foreman had a point... it would put
his work on hold for much longer than he wanted to deal with... :)

(* Our streets were all brick until the late '50s
when many of those were paved over. Many's the time something will be worked on under them which are taken up, stacked in a pile, work done,
and the bricks replaced. After they settle down its like they were
never taken up. (And there are no potholes on brick streets, since
they are spaced to allow water to drain off and soak into the ground.
We have 120 year old brick street as good as when they were laid down
and asphalted streets only a few years old full of potholes. The
streets may get ripples here and there but no potholes to be filled).

They just don't make things like they useta.... <G> Seriously,
though... bricks and cobblestones made good streets... Probably weren't
as hot to drive on... though one couldn't drive as fast on them,
probably... which isn't necessarily a bad thing.... :)

And being retired there isn't a lot they can say about the matter.
Watta they gonna do, fire me? :)
There is that... ;) Might not think of you first to fill in... not
that that's such a bad thing either... <G>

I'll get calls on a semi-regular basis to fill in somewhere. Since
I don't have a car I'm (thankfully) somewhat limited in where I can go
and how soon. I don't mind filling in once in a while.

And you wouldn't mind not having to quite so often... except maybe for
the jingle in the pocket it produces... ;)

So, if you make your grand tour, might you come as far north as
Rochester NY...? See some old friends here...?

As I read Your post it made me remember one day a Machinist at one of the places I worked at told me that the Payroll Office asked him to cash some
of his payroll checks because it was messing up their book keeping.

The man told me he didn't need the money but he worked because he wanted to. When he got a paycheck he put it with the others they gave him until he
wanted to cash a bunch of them at the bank.

The man told me he didn't need the money but he worked because he wanted to.

If I have a cheque with only a day or two on it (from filling in for someone)
I'll pick up that cheque at some future date.
I was asked one time why I took so long to pick it up and I said the same thing, I didn't really need it, then add "But then I don't want to throw Wendell's (the owner) bookkeeping off.
One time a year or so ago I stopped to pick up a cheque about a week after they came out.
At the bank it wasn't accepted. (I generally use the lobby ATM to deposit the cheque but this time I wanted some cash back).
I couldn't understand why and spoke with someone who said the account had been hacked with the account number being changed. It went on for a couple of days to get that one little cheque deposited. The boss refused to write another one and the bank wouldn't accept the old one.
It was eventually settled where they did and everything worked out.
I joked at the bank Wendell was too tight to "waste" another cheque. The guy knew Wendell and readily agreed. :)

    Joe,

I joked at the bank Wendell was too tight to "waste" another cheque. The g
knew Wendell and readily agreed. :)

I heard of a case in Washington state, where this older man wanted to
just cash a check at his bank. Well, they had recently put in a parking
garage downtown, and you had to either get the ticket validated by the
bank, or pay a parking fee.

Well, the bank didn't consider "cashing a check" a transaction worth validating the parking ticket (they wanted a deposit into the bank
    instead).

That set the man off. He growled "Well, it's obvious you don't need
me...and I obviously don't need you. I have accounts in here totalling
tens of thousands of dollars. I wish to close all of them...checking and savings...out right now. I'm going to take my business where I'm
    appreciated"!!

The teller summoned the manager, but the damage was done. The manager
ending up issuing a cashiers check for all that money to the now former customer, and he promptly left...paying the parking garage fee, albeit grudingly. However, he went to a competing bank, and shall we say, they
were ready to "kiss his feet"!! :)

She believed only ambulances needed to go over 35 mph. Her usual speed was around 20-25 mph.

JM>> I do have some cash on hand hidden in my apartment just in case I
JM>> might need some and unable to get to an ATM.

I just tend to carry some with me.... rarely if ever use an ATM... :)

When I use the ATM its to get carrying around money.

JM>> I also always carry some hidden cash in my wallet.

I used to do that... I remember coming across some I'd hidden too well
and totally forgaot was there... A very pleasant surprise... :)

Years ago I lived paycheque to paycheque and didn't need a bank. I just cashed my cheque at the bank it was drawn on.
I was burgled in the summer of 1980 and after that hid money here and there,
in books, clothes in the closet, old letters in a packet, etc. I did have some
cash in a drawer so if it happened again I wouldn't lose everything.
After some years I would still find a 10 or 20 hidden away I had forgot about.

That sounds like your schedule will likely derail any thoughts of
actually doing your grand tour.... Remember, you are supposed to have
the tour planned so that you can remind them that you are retired and
have a life of your own.... ;)

I got a call at 0600 Tuesday (I'm an early riser, I'm usually up around 0500,
give or take a half hour or so) asking me to fill in that day at a place I like, which I did.
It's place I spent my weekends from last July to May, and sometimes on Wednesday as well.
On weekends I took my laptop since the place was closed and people allowed in
had their own swipe cards. Weekends I take my tablet for e-mail, read books, etc.
"Working" there is like a day off with pay. Doing a lot of stuff I would be doing at home, and getting paid for it. :)

I was wondering if You started seeing the inbalance(s) shortly after

    Hmmmmmmm.

Note: I do have an inbalanced mind. (I think)

P.S. I wrote that last line for Daryl, He probably already thought of an comment to make while reading the other lines I wrote, but I decided to

No more than usual hackers. :)
Speaking of hackers, there has been a time or two unknown individuals would make withdrawals from my account. I get a daily balance and know right off if something is wrong.
Chase has always taken care of that. They put an immediate hold on the account, give new account/card numbers, make refunds and throw in a few extras and perks.
Once in a while I'll get inquiries if I had made that purchase, such as the few times I travel and something is brought miles away.

The Bank Statement was always correct. I wasn't.

Occasionally there will be a little difference in my balance and the banks. I make the adjustment with a line reading "To balance" + or -
the amount the bank has. Usually a few cents or maybe a dollar or two.

Whenever that happens to me, I go back through and figure out where I
made the error, and fix it right straight down to the last entry...
Once, I found an error that the company receiving the check made... but
since it was put through to the bank electronically, I did end up making
that adjustment, too.... And made a call to the company, since they'd
charged me a late fee based on the full balance since literally only 2
cents was left on the bill (they'd read seven instead of the nine I
wrote, ignoring the written out line, obviously).... They refunded me
the late charge, and I paid the 2 cents the next month with the new
    bill....

Only time I took the bank's word for a balance was when I took over the Treasurer's job for an organization, and the previous treasurer hadn't
been keeping a proper balance in the checkbook, and had lost
statements... I just went forward, and kept the books my way
    thereafter... ;)

The next night another pane was broken out and some small person was able to get in and open the door for them. There was no blood, torn clothing, etc around those two panes so had to have been a small person helped in.

    He was Mr Mileage.
His idea of traveling was putting as many miles between stops as possible.
He was born in the 1890s and went from dirt roads to nice paved highways. (Pre-interstate days of course). From horse and buggy (literally) to big V8's.

    Pretty car.
My ideal car is a 1948 four door De Soto, closely followed by a '48 Chrysler.
I like the look, shape, and everything about those cars.
Coupes and two-doors generally have no appeal to me, but a full size sedan does.

There just isn't that much "stuff" that I need. I have enough "stuff" now.
I've been paring down bit by bit the stuff I have getting rid of some of it.
Thankfully my apartment is small and not much room for more stuff and I don't
get rid of old stuff unless it can't be mended or repaired.
I do have a reproduction cathedral tabletop radio that hasn't worked in years

After that second night I never had another midnight visitor.
For several years after that if someone commented on something saying that was it was nice or whatever my defence radar went up. No matter who they were or how well I knew them.
I did find the new stereo they took at a pawn shop but since I had no serial
number or markings there was nothing the cops could do.
Even now I still put some marking inside of everything somewhere that can't be removed, covered, etc. Name, some part of my SSN, etc.

I could, and have done so in the past.
I told my superiors years ago I could work a day here or a day there if given
enough notice but don't call and say they need me somewhere an hour ago. Don't
waste your time and time, I'm not gonna do it. Well, not in those words, a little nicer than that.

find out how he got into my home without waking my wife!! I've been trying to do that for years, without success!!" <G>

    RFLOL!

Here's a better one. I saw a clip on Facebook earlier this evening,
when Red Skelton was on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (both of
them are dead and gone now). The video was an absolute scream...but 3 of
    the highlights were:

    1) Red asks "In Hell, if people get mad at someone, where do they tell
    them to go??". <G>

    2) At one time, Johnny Carson was writing some of Red's material...and
this one included the 2 seagulls, Gertrude and Heathcliff. Johnny was
doing this in the bathroom or the bedroom...and his wife walked in!! Red quipped "That's when your wife felt your marriage was in doubt". <G>

    3) Along that line, Gertrude and Heathcliff were waiting on a bird to
show up, and when he did, he was literally "as naked as a jaybird", and
all bruised. They asked "What happened to you??", and the bird replied
"I flew too low over southern California, and that badminton deal about
    killed me"!! <BG>

My father was a lead foot.
So you learned from him how not to do it...? ;)

He was known for taking speed limit signs as suggested speed
    limits. :)

    That's pretty common nowadays... ;)

each one) with my father looking at his watch saying it was getting
late we needed to get back on the road.
    Also impatient, I see... ;)

    He was Mr Mileage.
His idea of traveling was putting as many miles between stops as
    possible.

I prefer to not make stops between start and destination... but that
doesn't mean I'd necessarily plan lots of miles between, depending on
    the trip in question... :)

He was born in the 1890s and went from dirt roads to nice
paved highways. (Pre-interstate days of course). From horse and buggy (literally) to big V8's.

Grampa was born 1884... before cars, he'd generally walk... :) And he
wasn't in a hurry to get a car... I think his son bought one first... ;)

    Grampa only had
the first and only car he bought... a 1940 Chrysler, IIRC... ;)

    Pretty car.

My brother-in-law and his sons have it now... :)

My ideal car is a 1948 four door De Soto, closely followed by a '48 Chrysler. I like the look, shape, and everything about those cars.
Coupes and two-doors generally have no appeal to me, but a full size
    sedan does.

I prefer the four-doors, myself... even on the more modern cars... Found
out the hard way that the door hinges on the 2-doors tend to fall apart
sooner, since the door is larger (and heavier)...

Since I am somewhat retired now and working a day here and there
every I just cash that entire cheque.
After all, for just a day, it's not all that much... ;)

And no more than I do at that counter its like a day off with pay.
:) I take my laptop on weekends, tablet during the week and just
relax and do there what I would be doing (for the most part) at home
and getting paid for it. :)

Yeah, you keep rubbing it in... <G>

(Never been able to get Fido though to work on either the laptop or tablet)

Now that's not so great, though... ;)

still had over $30 of it left two months later. He said I was a real
    skin flint.
Some people are shoppers, some just aren't... ;)

There just isn't that much "stuff" that I need. I have enough
"stuff" now. I've been paring down bit by bit the stuff I have
getting rid of some of it. Thankfully my apartment is small and not
much room for more stuff and I don't get rid of old stuff unless it
can't be mended or repaired. I do have a reproduction cathedral
tabletop radio that hasn't worked in years and a few other things
    though.

Some things are just worth saving... :)

small person helped in. That time they got some money (including a
collection of silver coins), new stereo, small odds and ends.
But nothing since then and that's been nearly 40 years ago.
The first time they were casing the joint...? What stopped them from
coming back after...? And were they ever caught....?

After that second night I never had another midnight visitor.
For several years after that if someone commented on something
saying that was it was nice or whatever my defence radar went up. No matter who they were or how well I knew them.

Yeah... that sort of things does tend to spook one...

I did find the new stereo they took at a pawn shop but since I had
no serial number or markings there was nothing the cops could do.
Even now I still put some marking inside of everything somewhere
that can't be removed, covered, etc. Name, some part of my SSN, etc.

A wise practice... Even if never needed, it's better to be prepared...

I worked her shift yesterday and be back there again on Saturday.
And I am sure once school starts back up in a couple of weeks I'll
be there every weekend again til May. Along with working the home
    football games. ==sigh==
You could say no, you know.... ;)

I could, and have done so in the past.
I told my superiors years ago I could work a day here or a day there
if given enough notice but don't call and say they need me somewhere an hour ago. Don't waste your time and time, I'm not gonna do it. Well,
not in those words, a little nicer than that.

At least then they couldn't say you hadn't warned them... ;)

I did help out one time on short notice and my captain kept
    apologising, thanking me, etc.

At least he appreciated the inconvenience it was causing you... :)

As for plans for my grand tour, they are on hold right now.
As I rather thought would happen.... ;)

And be nicer when the price of gas drops. :)

But when it does, will you be in a position to take advantage of it...?

was of the opinion, "You've seen one log cabin, you've pretty much see 'em all".

When I watch an old movie and something happens I think "they couldn't do that today with all the various security cameras, etc"

But, but, but I would miss all that good food from the tailgaters...
I do eat well at the games now. Once in a while its like a theme was planned with many having the same dishes, etc.
This one group, at the last home game, always has a big steak dinner and all
    the trimmings for me. :)
One time it rained the whole time. After people leave for the game there is
always someone who stays behind to watch over the stuff. There are a lot of rather disputable people wandering about the tailgating areas. Most just wanting a hand out, or an adult beverage or something, which they had had their
share of. One doesn't want to return at half time to find everything missing.
But everyone looks out for everyone else as well. And the majority being law enforcement officers of some sort (city, county, state) the bad guy wouldn't get very far. Plus we have people from the prosecuting attorneys office and a judge. :)
Anyway, this one time it was pouring the rain, I was in my poncho in line at
one table that had beans. I remarked it was like being in the army, eating beans in the rain. :)
There are tents all over and the tables are covered.

At least then they couldn't say you hadn't warned them... ;)

I've told all my security employers over the years the same thing.

was over, I drove to Atlanta GA, stayed a couple nights with a pastor
there, and picked up my mother-in-law at the airport Sunday afternoon...
Monday morning, we drove to Charlestown SC, and did research there in libraries, and over the next few days, did research along the coast,
where my families had been, SC, NC, VA, and then I delivered her home in Syracuse, and thence back home... It was a wonderful trip... but dunno
if I'd have the stamina to do it now... ;) As I recall, I did all the
driving, even after I'd picked up Mom... dunno if she'd've been able to
drive the manual transmission my car had.... :)

The Pacific NW is a beautiful sight. Thought about moving there but
being born in St. Petersburg i was pretty much rooted in.. Damn it's
    HOT down here in paradise!

Never been to the Pacific NW... I'd love to go there sometime,
though.... :) At least for a visit... ;) It's been hot this year
    pretty much everywhere....

    Nancy,

I usually drive non-stop except for gas even now... but I don't go as
far as I used to in my younger days... I think the longest nonstop was NB>12 hours or so... now it's not likely to be over 8 hours... I'm usually NB>driving solo, so there's nobody to share the driving with...

The last time I drove that long was in 1997, when I went from Little
Rock, Arkansas to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Single Square Dancers
USA Labor Day Weekend. While I had family in town, I chose to stay at a
nearby hotel. But, I only made a pit stop for nature in Jackson,
Tennessee each way...otherwise, I made the entire trip on one tank of
    gas.

park the van in a chruch's parking lot for the night and sleep there, NB>too... But not being a guy, bushes didn't work quite so well for me...

That reminds me of the cute joke where Momma just got done potty
training her daughter. As a note, this was nearly 60 years ago, when you
didn't have to worry about sexual predators, etc. at the interstate
highway rest stops...and life was simpler.

Anyway, she taught her daughter to always look for the LONGER
name...WOMEN versus MEN...and her daughter was good with that.

Well, one summer, they were on vacation, and stopped at a Rest Area
(most of those are closed down now), for a lunchtime picnic. Afterwards,
the little girl had to go potty, so her Momma told her "Remember what I said"...and she replied "Yes, ma'am"...look for the longer name.

Unfortunately, it was NOT noted as WOMEN versus MEN -- it was LADIES
versus GENTLEMEN -- guess which one was longer!! <BG>

So, the little girl walks in, and here's a little boy, naked below the
waist, and in her innocence, she asks him "What are you doing?? What
have you got there??" (she realized she didn't have "one"). The little
boy explained that to her, and she said "Boy!! That's a handy little
thing to have along at picnics!!". <BG>

I would've loved to have seen her Momma's face when she told her about
    her experience!! ROFL!!

    About half and half.
Muffy put up a fuss going to the car, then the first few minutes of
the trip. Had to run the a/c with the windows up. Once on the road she settled down, mostly laying under the seat crying.
But, come to stop and go traffic she decided that would be a good time
to wander around the pedals. :)
When I got where ever I was going she would hide under the car,
checking the underside, and exiting in grease and dirt.
One time at a roadside stop in Ohio she took off for the woods.
She was near me one minute and gone the next. I figured she had just
gone to use the huge outside cat box. When I was ready to leave she was
no where to be found. I looked and looked, called and called then said
in a loud voice I guess I no option but to leave her there, when she came creeping out. :)
One time I was visiting a cloistered nun cousin and the nuns wouldn't
let her stay in the same room with me. She was of course female and I
    male. :)
This was one time she had inspected the underside of the car and
covered in grease and oil and they put in a linen closet. Now the
Dominicans wore white, which got stained in grease. It was only an hour
or so later they decided it would be a good idea for her to stay with me
    after all. :)
(It took a little while to clean her up, and after that they all fell
in love with her. She did look a bit ragged at first).
I found a carrier several years later someone had thrown out. Just
cleaned it up real well and left it out for the two I had then to explore
    and get used to it.

It reminds me of the joke (I probably have told this before) where
this young boy and girl in the small town neighborhood, were good
friends, and were walking home from church Sunday morning...she was
Catholic, and he was Protestant. During the church time, a bad storm
came through, and there was a lot of standing water in the streets and elsewhere.

Well, as the 2 kids are on the way home, they come across this huge
"lake" in the street. They agree that if they come home with wet
clothes, they'll get the spanking of their lives. The little girl is
concerned as to what they should do...and her friend says "I tell you
what. I'll be like Sir Walter Raleigh" (apparently, he loved history).
He told her "Let's strip butt naked. I'll carry our clothes across, to
keep them dry, then I'll carry you across".

Accepting his explanation, they proceeded to strip butt naked, and he
did as he was told. As they are on the other side of the "lake", looking
at each others nude body, the little girl says "I didn't know there was
such a difference between Protestants and Catholics". <G>
