    My guess is that now with 50+ IPv6 listed nodes that one can connect with on a crashme/crashyou basis and polling the IPv4 only host/hubs on a regular basis, it would be quit doable. But of course, as always the proof of the pudding is in the eating...

    Hi All!

    Yesterday my DOCSIS CPE conducted an experiment.
    It tried out if it is still functional if the PS lowers its voltage from the nominal 12V to 0.9V.
    The result is that it stops working ...

    When I came back in the evening, every LED was lit, but nothing worked.

    I dreaded DS-Lite coming my way with a new CPE.

    Thanks god it was only the power supply, I connected it to the PS of the STB and all is fine now ;))

    You can call them, and if you are lucky, they will reconfigure your CPE to v4 only.

    Most people can get away with DS-lite just as well or maybe even better. Most of my internet access is as a client. For surfing the web or reading e-mail I do not need a public IPv4 address. I run a web server, but it isn't used very much and if it would only be accessible to those with am IPv6 connection, it would be no great loss.

    Fidonet... well.. it would be an interesting experiment...

    There was a time when I thought I could not do without a POTS connection. In my perception that was not all that long ago. But now I have no POTS connection any more. I am doing fine with IP only. I was not forced to give it up, I just looked at the logs and saw there had been no connects in a year. I decided I was just wasting electricity keeping the modem conection alive.

    IPv4 will be different. Some day we will have to make the choice between giving it up or pay extra for it. Or maybe just give it up, preiod.

    In the very long run IPv4 will disappear. Some day the burden of maintaining two protocols will not justify the benefits and IPv6 only equipment will be dominant. I may not live to see that. Fidonet may not live to see that...

    Here in The Netherlands, there is a division. De dsl and fibre providers that offer IPv6 offer full dual stack. For the cable providers the situation is different. After the fusion of Ziggo and UPC, there is just one big cable provider. There are two or three very small ones that probably will soon be eaten by the remaining big one and so they play no significant part in the game.

    As I said, Ziggo and UPC merged, but it would seem they only merged administratively. The technical networks are still separated. In the area covered by what used to be UPC, they offer DS-Lite to new customers. In the area covered by what used to be Ziggo, they go dual stack.

    Maybe they hope that most customers only need IPv4/port for a short time and not permanently so that they can rotate the adresses/ports among customers. A bit like in the dial up age when customers got a dynamic IP address that was reassigned to another customer after they broke the connection.

    You still have to install applications and maintain the vserver. That isn't any different from running a server at home. The vserver in some datacenter has also a few benefits, like UPS, faster internet access and multiple internet connections for redundancy.

    Not my point of view at all.
    No fun is when the SD Card (or eMMC) in my odroid (where the node currently rund) fails again :)
    Also not fun running the fido traffic over the shared residential connection which has only 7 MBit/s in upstream and is used for all LAN access from my home.

    I have no issue whatsoever to use a vserver where I have root access and I can set up whatever I want.

    I was very pleasantly surprised how extremely well the "webGUI" works.
    You can remotely reset, connect (including VNC access even to the BIOS).

    So in all I much prefer to concentrate on the SW side, and let the HW be managed by people that do that for a living.

    If I were to run a bussines, those would be considerations. But I am retired, I no longer run a bussines, for me this is pure hobby. If my servers go down for a couple of hours or a day, it is no big deal. I like to run my own hardware. Plus that I have some mixed feelings about the cloud.     Even though I have native IPv6, I'm still fairly certain my ISP doesn't offer any of that yet. They haven't even announced that it's available to us yet. So I'm guessing I'm just one of a few to actually realize it's there and utilize it.

    Not a realistic option here. I'd either have to change from cable to dsl or take a commercial account with the cable provider.

Once TCP/IP came off the ground, the older protocols faded out pretty quickly. They may still be in use in some remote corners of the cyberworld, but they play no role of significance any more. My educated guess is that the same will happen to IPv4 in the not too distant future. Better be prepaired..

    Until then I want my public IPv4 ;)

    Yes, if someone comes up with a killer app that works on IPv6 only, then there will be a mad scramble. People like us, who are already on IPv6 will be in the box seat to take it up. :) The killer app would have to be some lightweight peer-peer system, as anything that requires a server will generally be easy to make work over NAT. Peer-peer applications are much harder (though usually not impossible, with complex workarounds).

    It will come, though it wouldn't be brute force by address, as the address space is so huge. It's more likely to be DNS based, targeting hosts that have AAAA records, as well as other situations where once an IPv6 host is discovered by some other means, scanning will commentce.

    I personal view is different.
    I have written my thesis about Mobile IPv6, and have IPv6 vie tunnek (6bone, Sixxs and now HE) since 2004.

    But a "normal" user does not have a real tangible advantage from IPv6 today. That is why "normal" people do not demand IPv6, because it does not make a difference for many users.

    I have done an analysis of IPv6 usage and issues for a big indusrty partner when I worked for the Technical University of Vienna.
    They took it, and put it into a drawer (gladly they paid for it first)

    To be honest ... there still are not enough pain points.
    Most people do not care even when they have CGNATv4.
    And the big ISPs have large enough pools to cover people who care with "real v4" addresses.

    If many people would terminate their ISP contract because of that, it would change.
    As long as the average end customer sees no benefit for himself, he will not care.
    And when 95% of the customers do not care, the ISPs do not care.

    My current point of view is that the relevant servers for most people (google, akamai, Facebook, etc.) will have dual stack.

    And that 75% of the people will not care if they have DS, DS-Lite or CGNATv4. It simply makes no difference to them.

    They can watch Youtube and go to Facebook, and they see no difference.

    Until then I want my public IPv4 ;)

    I know of end customers that got switched to DS-Lite and they did not notice. If you are not using port forwards then most things continue to run ...

    They basically changed their package in a way that I did not like, and told me that I can either migrate to the new package or get a reduction and stay in the old one.

    I have the minimal TV package included.
    They have thrown out the only TV channels that I sometimes watch.
    (BR-Alpha, Discovery, Arte, Ph%nix, History channel, ....)

    I do not watch TV often, but when I do I watch those.
    And the additional 25 MBit/s .... does not really make a difference to me, so I did not migrate to the new package.
    (OK ... the added 2.5 MBit upstream would have been nice ... but ... meh)

    That is why "normal" people do not demand IPv6, because it does not make
    a difference for many users.



    My current point of view is that the relevant servers for most people (google, akamai, Facebook, etc.) will have dual stack.

    And that 75% of the people will not care if they have DS, DS-Lite or
    CGNATv4.
    It simply makes no difference to them.

    They can watch Youtube and go to Facebook, and they see no difference.

    Well, the point is somewhat that the situation which you quoted as
    "normal" actually wasn't normal, but we got people accustomed to it, so
    it ended up as your second half, "as long as FB/YT have ips I can reach
    then internet is up", but when v4 really starts running out so that even
    us "white male computer nerds" can get an address of their own, and you
    can't set up a server _at all_ anymore without renting one IP from FB/Google/AWS, then perhaps someone would listen to reason from the
    stiff old people who can say that "when I grew up, anyone had a real ip
    of their own, we still firewalled, but you could allow access to your
    server if you wanted". And you can get back to that situation, with v6
    which is getting more and more available.

    I think Asia and Africa are seeing lots more of using v6, since they got
    so puny allocations compared to US/EU so the revolution may come from
    that end. Some weird service which runs only on v6 which pushes people
    to beg their ISPs. (pokemon related? ;)

    It will come, though it wouldn't be brute force by address, as the address space is so huge. It's more likely to be DNS based, targeting hosts that have AAAA records, as well as other situations where once
    an IPv6 host is discovered by some other means, scanning will
    commentce.

    I think so too. The last few hacker cons hosted a few talks about IPv6 recon.

    While all of my devices have public IPv6 addresses, you can only ping
    the ones that I have setup as servers. The others are blocked for unsolicited incoming traffic by my firewall, which blocks everything inbound by default.

    The decision is your's. The point is that IPv6 allows you to choose, a single IPv4 address plus NAT don't.

    Indeed. "Normal" customers should not be bothered with these details. My UPC has been telling me that customers would not notice the transition to IPv6. They have been telling that since about 2010. Ans indeed I haven't noticed anything until last summer. No IPv6, no nothing. The they went quiet. And now I have IPv6. But they stopped mentioing it on their official publications. So my IPv6 is "unopfficial". It may be gone tomorrow.

    Most people do not care even when they have CGNATv4.
    And the big ISPs have large enough pools to cover people who care with "real v4" addresses.

    True. My syster lives in a home for the elderlt people. She has a laptop, but no internet connection of her own. She uses the WiFi network of the home. So she is behind a NAT. No IPv6 and so she only has an IPv4 address in the private range. She does not know that. She does not know what a NAT is, she does not know what a public IPv4 address is. People like her do not have to know.

    If many people would terminate their ISP contract because of that, it would change. As long as the average end customer sees no benefit for himself, he will not care. And when 95% of the customers do not care,
    the ISPs do not care.

    That goes for the big ones who mainly have consumers as their customers. But the small companies that offer hostng services really have prpblems. Unlike the big ones that presumable still have enough IPv4 in stack (do they really)? the small ones who need IPv4 have problems. They have to buy IPv4 at a cost of abou 1 EUR / IP and if they need a few thousand IPs, they are at a serious disadvantage. They really feel the pain already.

    The long run is veeeeeeery long.

    Making predictions is easy. Making predictions thay come true is not
    so easy. When the predictions concern the future, it is very hard.

    But I am not my sister. I am not a "normal user" and neither are you. We /know/ something about networking. We have studied, we have degrees, we know what we are talking about. And that comes with resposibilities. We can not remain silent and say that it does not concern us. Yes, it does not really affect us now, but we can see ahead. We can not predict the future, but we can see that a falling stone will eventually hit the ground. So we have to speak up. To our ISPs and to our governments.

    The internet is to important a resource to leave it to the market alone.

    They can watch Youtube and go to Facebook, and they see no difference.

    Until then I want my public IPv4 ;)

    I am quit sure that I will get this particular wish for a reasonable amount of time in the future ;)

    I do not really use it for anything on the phone, but it is there.
    But my previous operator (Hutchison 3g) and my current one UPC both
    give public dynamic IPs. (Yes even UPC who reconfigured their cable network to DS-Lite)

    That seems to be the policy of Liberty Global right now.

    We have a couple of people in the Dutch internet forum dedicated to IPv6. You mentioned that customers who are on DS-Lite can be "downgraded" to IPv4 only. Apparently the reverse is also true. One of the guys in that forum got a new modem as an existing customer and was configured for Iv4 only. Only new customers get DS-Lite. But he managed to be converted from IPv4 only to DS-Lite as an existing customer.

    So he voluntarily made the plunge. He promised he would report his findings. We will see...

    (No he is not a Fidonet sysop)

    This will not happen.
    What will happen (and is already happening) is that big ISPs take away IPv4 addresses from "normal" users, and give them either DS-Lite or CGNATv4 and reuse or sell their recovered stock.

    The hosting company that I use gives you 1 IPv4 and a /64 v6 for all their products.
    (including their 1.99 EUR vserver)
    You can get additional v4 addresses for 1 EUR/month
    (or additional /64 IPv6 subnets also for 1 EUR/month)

    These prices are faaaar away from "cannot get" IPv4 addresses.

    So for me the conclusio is, that people who do not care will loose their public v4 address.
    But anybody can get single v4 addresses for relatively cheap.
    I predict that v4 addresses will stay cheap for "white male computer nerds" (as you put it)

    and you can't set up a server _at all_ anymore without renting

    I do not see that happening.
    See my comment for a 1.99 EUR vserver with v4 and v6.

    US had much more IPs, because it started ARPAnet.
    Stanford and many US companies have /8s!

    Pokemon works nicely on CGNATv4.

    Sadly yes, but programmers keep coming up with clever NAT workarounds on IPv4, and the concentration of services into big companies like Facebook hasn't helped either, too many handy big servers to get around NAT with. :(

    Yes, that's true, and I like having the option to put devices out on the open Internet with their own IPv6 address. I have 2 BBSs there, among other things. :)

    As someone who transitioned officially to native dual stack IPv4/IPv6, I will attest to the fact that I could not tell the difference, unless something was borked on the other end, such as the time last year when I needed to access a government website and couldn't, until I disabled IPv6 in my browser. I did send them feedback and the problem was quickly fixed. There was also the time that members of an international ham radio club complained that their website was down, but I couldn't reproduce the problem. Turns out that something broke on IPv4 at the hosting provider, but I was accessing the site fine via IPv6.

    I'm particular how I setup any hosting I have, to avoid issues with either protocol. This is the reason I have two hostnames for this BBS - one is IPv4 only for user/QWK access, as the BBS side is IPv4 only, the other hostname is in the various nodelists I'm in, because my mailer is fully IPv6 capable (binkd), and I want to encourage IPv6 adoption on Fidonet and the othernets I'm on.

    My partner also doesn't notice that we have IPv6 capabilities, neither does the occasional visitor who uses our wifi. Everything "just works". :)

    In some ways, IPv6 may be a victim of its own effective transition mechanisms.

    I _do_ notice the difference, but that's because (1) I look, I have extensions in my browser to report what IP version is being used, and (2) I like to host servers. I have 3 IPv4 and one IPv6 networks overlaid on the same wire here:

    IPv4 LAN (RFC1918 addresses - default DHCP)
    IPv4 public - a /29 for hosting servers, including the 2 BBSs. Provided by a VPN.
    IPv4 AMPRnet/HAMnet - I have a /24 allocation in 44.x, I use a /29 for the LAN and the rest is for RF and other networks. I'm using IP in IP tunneling.
    IPv6 global - I have a /56 IPv6 allocation, which I'm currently using a /64 of for my LAN, and am considering experimenting with another /64 for ham radio.


    ... Because of BBSing, reading and writing actually pay off!

    I agree ... but in the end it boils down to a cost/benefit analysis for the ISPs.
    And as long as they do not see decline in paying customers, and they would need to invest money because of some crazy geeks, ISP management will be reluctant to do so.

    The goal was to do lobbying for IPv6, the results were not visible.

    I am sorry ... bit I am disillusioned ...
    The IPv6TF head was the CTO of a big ISP ... the same ISP is still not offering residential IPv6.
    Currently I am quit sure that real change will only come when "normal" people demand IPv6.
    When they feel the pain, and make the ISP also feel the pain EN MASSE.

    UPC has switched to DS-Lite by default for their ISP customers.
    They also started a MVNO recently, and they are handing out PUBLIC v4 (only, no V6) addresses.
    Very few people need public v4 addresses on their mobiles.

    The IPv6TF head was the CTO of a big ISP ... the same ISP is still not offering residential IPv6.

    But as you can see, nothng much is happening any more. The Dutch IPv6 Task Froce fell asleep in 2014. :(

    Currently I am quit sure that real change will only come when "normal" people demand IPv6. When they feel the pain, and make the ISP also
    feel the pain EN MASSE.

    Already in 2009 I decided not to buy any new network equipment that does not support IPv6. I managed to live up to that. I also said goodbye to one DNS provider for not providing IPv6.

    It did not make much of an impression....

    Sure ... but not scarce enough.
    UPC has switched to DS-Lite by default for their ISP customers.

    UPC is a daughter of Liberty Global and switching to DS-Lite seems to be their global policy.

    They also started a MVNO recently, and they are handing out PUBLIC v4 (only, no V6) addresses. Very few people need public v4 addresses on
    their mobiles.

    Here Ziggo ( also a daughter of Liberty Global) has entered into a partnership with Vodaphone. So they will be offering moble via the Vodaphone network. I do not know if they will offer IPv6, IPv4 or CGNAT.

    So for me the conclusio is, that people who do not care will
    loose their public v4 address. But anybody can get single v4
    addresses for relatively cheap. I predict that v4 addresses will
    stay cheap for "white male computer nerds" (as you put it)

    I predict that eventually they will become worthless. When
    "everyone" has IPv6, there will no longer be a substantial demand
    for IPv4 and so the price will drop to zero.

    I agree ... the question is when will this point in time be ...
