Greetings All!

After a successful build and install of 'gedlnx', I went in search of
some documentation, which I've found in the 'manuals' directory.

Couple of questions .....

- Are these manuals current(they seem very old)
- How do I compile 'gold_ref.txt' and 'gold_usr.txt'

Probably. I don't know if anything new has been added this century. Mostly the maintainers have been fixing itty-bity stuff.

No need. They're plain text and most people will tell you to simply use a notepad-type of thing, but from experience you will need something with a search function: generally an editor of some sort (e.g. in Linux geany, mousepad, gedit, nico, et al).

They have not been updated for a long time.

I would suggest to start from the advanced.cfg in the config sample package.
It contains a lot of explanation.
If you encounter some issues, just post them here.

Addendum ... you should also add the help file, so that you can press f1 to get
help.

Current versions also support spell checkers that check while you type.

Well yes, they *are* plain text but if you look at them, you'll see
stuff which indicates to me that the documents need compiling.

Comparing the documents against 'goldref.txt' and 'goldusr.txt' which
I "borrowed" from elsewhere, the differences are pretty obvious :)

Kewl. You are probably seeing macro doovers for some long-dead WP/text processing proggie. I've learned to visually ignore them for the last 25 years. If you find a use for them with an actual util then I have reserved a cookie (biscuit) just for you, that you are welcome to collect. Only on the condition that you reveal the secret to the world first, of course.

well, not really "compiling" per se but some processing and assemblage, sure...

at a guess, i'd say (la)Tex or Groff... looking in /docs, there's comment or two about Groff but i don't see anything similar in /manuals... i also don't find anything that jumps out in any of the build scripts that say "we're going to build the docs and manuals here" or similar...
