Hi! I want to know if there is a SID player for DOS. I want to play SIDs on a
Win98 computer in DOS mode within a networked environment.

The last update to that page anyway, the actual software is from 1996
and the accuracy of the emulation is noticeably worse than most later
SID players. However it does consume far, far, fewer system resources
which means it even works on my old 486. Fun interface as well.

I seem to remember to have used this one for my SID collection in plain
DOS mode, before switching to Linux in 1998.

Now I use the SID player part from the Commodore VICE emulator called . It has many options, like emulate the 6581 or 8580.

I restarted the computer in DOS mode and tried SIDSHELL. I couldn't find the sample SID files. :( They were on a floppy and have a .SID extension.

Haven't used DOS for decades. But I seem to remember you just pass the
SID file to it on the command line. Something like

sidplay c:path\to\file\Rambo.sid

That is how I do it on Linux, using vsid as part of VICE when I want to
avoid the GUI.

vsid -console /path/to/Rambo.sid

But I'm just guessing.

<sigh of relief> I've got your answer for you, but it took some
effort. After checking that the installation on my DOS laptop
was playing SIDs fine, I decided to give sidsetup.exe a test
run. It turns out that it deletes the old sidplay.cfg file
even if you cancel the set-up though, so I then had to run it
again to set up the sound card. And then the SID files would
no longer appear in the file selector!

After a lot of fiddling with the sidplay.cfg file to work
out what change I'd obviously made to it in the past in order
to make it work, I finally figured it out:

Change the line:
DAT_ext = .DAT
to:
DAT_ext = .SID

The manual sort of hints at this by saying that it supports
".DAT + .SID" files, but it took a long time for that to
sink in!

To be safe, I renamed "sidsetup.exe" "sidsetup.xxx" to
encourage me to think twice before sabotaging myself again.

SidPlay for DOS doesn't seem to support specifying files on
the command line like the Linux ones do.


P. S. VACSID seems to have the same probem, even with the
SID extension seemingly correctly set in its ".INI" file.
I don't know the cause of this one.

Open Cubic Player works well, but I spent some time
setting up the config file for that a long time ago.

I tried it and got an error stating that there is no EMS memory. :( I disabled EMS because I wanted the extra memory for other purposes. I have QEMM386 for Windows somewhere, or if I don't, I can downloaded it from vetusware.com. However, there is a
problem with the computer that certain drivers couldn't be loaded. Four of the
drivers are from a dead version of QEMM I hard-uninstalled from the computer due to an incompatibility with DriveSpace. Will reinstalling fix the problem?
