But tell us all about the C64 graphic modes. Can you easily mix them? Did you have re definable character sets?

Did the C64 have display lists or display list interrupts. If you don't know what that means then the answer is no.

The C64 was a very good machine BUT the 400/800 was NOT a POS.

AFAIK you cannot mix graphic modes on the Commodore 64. But you could

I think it used a kind of frame bugger. There was a routine to scroll 7
or 8 bits. In the meantime you could prepare a new bitmap and switch to
    that after the bit scroll.

If the hardware ("GPU") was superior that didn't really matter.

    True.

In the end, sprites was a dead end. After amiga, there was almost no use

I disagree. Well being a Commodore 64 user.

I could now raise the question, what was the king of the 8bit computers
of the early 80s. I suppose it was the Commodore 64 by outperforming any competitor in the sheer numbers of units sold. Suppose the Atari 8bit
line came second. There might even have been better computers. But they
were either too expensive or didn't had the distribution network to make
an impact. I think the Memotech MTX <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memotech_MTX> could had taken the crown,
but came too late (1983) and had financial problems leading to their demise.

In the UK, the Commodore C64 was more expensive than other machines, so many chose Sinclairs, though it has a good Wurst rating because of it's sausage-feeling keyboard (at least on the runner keys models).

The Sinclair were only successful because of the price. If you look at
the markets outside the UK the C64 had the biggest market share, even outperforming the IBM PC for some time.

I did modify the character set not using raster interrupts. That was 1988

You *can* switch graphic modes and also mix graphic and text modes on
the C=64. You do that by counting the horizontal retrace interrupts and
using the appropriate blanking pulses to change the mode "on the fly".

Sure, but they were "only" 8, even if they could stretch vertically over
the whole screen and you could actually reuse them horizontally with
some effort, but as I wrote, after amiga, almost no platform relied on
sprites anymore. If you wanted 200+ moving objects on the screen, it was
BOBs in some fashion and not sprites.
