  • C128 and BBS...how??

    In another thread someone mentioned setting up a BBS with a C128.

    I saw some videos a while back about people connecting 8-bit computers online and connecting to BBS's.

    How can I do that on my C128? (also have a C128D if that helps).

    I suspect they are using something to convert from serial to TCP/IP.

    I've seen WiFi232 popping up on Twitter quite a bit lately.

    It's actually a bit harder than it may appear. If you're gonna run a BBS on your C128 you need a User Port <-> RS-232-adapter, and that RS-232-adapter will
    vary depending on which BBS package you want to use. Some packages works with more generally available adapters such as the VIC-1011A, and others only work with the Swiftlink adapter which is very hard to come by and when it's on sale it goes for silly money.

    If you just want to connect other BBS:es from your C128, almost any User Port
    <-> RS-232-adapter will do, or one of these Wifi-modems that connect to the
    user port and then your wifi at home and acts as a hayes-compatible modem for the C128.

    Or you can do like I was trying to do, run one through emulation. I used the WinVICE C128 emulator, and setup a BBS that way. Unfortunately I'm not nearly as familiar with the C128, as I am with the C64, so I didn't get it runnig. I've gotten several different C64 BBSs running in WinVICE though. For a virtual
    modem a lot of people use Jim Brain's TCPSer, or TCPSer4J(Java version). You can even emulate different floppies(even the CMD-4000 3.2MB drives), and also hard drives.

    In this case you have to regard that most of these modems use an "9600 Baud hack" which works on the C64, but won't work in C128 mode if you have a 1571 connected (since it will use the necesary recources for the burst mode).
