Man... I got hit with that on my Atari with a hard drive attached.

Dang thing has been encrypting the files for 3 days. I have to wait for
it to finish before I can get the notification and send my payment in.
And then probably another week to decrypt them. :(

I know what you mean. Took a while before it finally got finished
encrypting a disk in both my 1541s and a tape in the Datasette.
Thankfully I had just gotten done with playing Omega Race and removed
the cartridge before it got encrypted!

I'm having a problem trying to figure out if Your next to last sentence
means that Your original message in this thread was a JOKE?

Or was it written for people who used a C=64 Emulator on a PC or MAC?

(Maybe the C=64 page on Wikipedia has information about this patch?).

AFAIK the Kernal ROM IC inside my C=64 on the printed circuit board
can't be changed by a File or something coming in one of the Ports
built in on the C=64.

My thoughts are to change what's written on a ROM Chip would be to
unsolder it from the circuit board and put it in a ROM BURNER and
then burn lot of locations that haven't been burned previously to
really mess up the Code on the ROM.

BTW, I've never Burned a ROM.

Years ago I talked with someone who owned a ROM Burner and listened to
what they did when they needed to Burn the Fuses (iirc) so the Chip
would perform the task they wanted the ROM Chip to do for them.

I may have read a article in a computer magazine about creating ROM Chips.??

Yes, it was a joke, of course. The WannaCry trojan couldn't run on a
Commodore 64, so there isn't actually a need to patch the C64 Kernal
to protect against it... to say nothing of the impossibility of a
trojan actually modifying the Kernal itself to put all of your data at risk.....

I've heard of the Apple ][ Floppy Drive DOS (Disk Operating System) Code
is placed in computer memory by reading a file that is on the Floppy
Disk when the System is Turned On.

No Boot Disk, No DOS. iirc.

The C= 1541 FDD has DOS in a ROM that's read when the drive is turned on.

A friend had the first Commodore Computer that I saw, a C= PET.
It came with a Tape Cassette Drive as other systems did in the early
days of computeing.

I waited until the price of the 1541 got lower before I felt I could
purchase it.
In March 1984I bought the 1541, 64 and VicModem300 the same day,
although I had to go to another store to get the 1541 since the local
store didn't have any 1541's in stock.

I read enough about storing programs on Tape and been to friends homes
where the computer they owned used Tape and had seen how long it took
to Load or Save a Program, that I didn't want to begin learning about
a home computer with Tape Storage.


... My PC is starting to drive me crazy(er). :)
