Merry Christmas all...
Well it looks like OS4.x won't be under the Xmas tree! :-< The Beta
version <cough> is now promised in mid January <cough>! Oh well, we've
heard all this before huh. ( Fleecy's Q&A @ AmigaWorld.net)
UBoot 1.0 is being tested and may be ready by the end of December!
I hear MAI has a boot disk out for Yellow Dog 3.0 =:o or :)
A updated UAE is ready and just been installed. Still doesn't have a
JIT engine. :-<
I was at Asha's Sunday chat recently. =:o KVirc is a real nice IRC
client. I've also installed Chatzilla which is a nice JavaCript irc. :)
Mr.Harware, Russ Norby, has 50 ans 68 pin SCSI cards for A1. I think
I'd like a 50 for the Catweasel. :) Do you hear me Santa!
I just got done installing Thor 2.6. Found the key file on the PC. :)
I even got AmiQWK 2.9 to work right. It seems the default config files
don't work to well in UAE. Anyway -- Unzip -x fname -- doesn't work, but
-- Unzip -j fname -- does work fine. Go configure! :)
There's a kernel 2.4.22 update available. USB2.0 support, Wacomb tablet,
and other stuff.
That just about covers all the happenings with the this local AmigaOne!
:Dennis
Thor 2.6 & GoldEd 5 -- I'm getting Future shocked with the AmigaOne!
Man, no December release of System 4? Sorry to hear that. I was
hoping that would actually happen. The beta version for those that
bought the AmigaOne at least. We have a member here in Dallas that
has been
actively looking forward to that. So I hope it happens soon.
As for me, I am still in the 68030 realm. :)

There's been quite a few people just waiting for OS4. I wouldn't
call
linux exactly user friendly. I may venture into Yellow Dog just
compare it with Debian. I don't know. It depends how good OS4 is!
According to Hyperion's announcement, it's matter off weeks now.

My experience with Linux has been about like yours from what I gather.
That is, I didn't find it very user friendly either. It was a year ago
(or so) that I last tried though. Maybe things are a bit better now?
But, I am waiting to really see OS4 before even making up my mind about
the AmigaOne.

well if its build the same "cool" way as amiga was in the days of OS1

well, i will say that amiga is better then beos :)
i am in this point inhabil since i have only used amiga and linux,
if linux is not user friendly i belive beos could be as good as

What was the linux distro was it ? YDL is working out for some of
the Amigans who had unhappiness in Debian. Since MAI is the author
of Teron and the A1, it may the better taylored linux for A1s. I'm
taking notes for now! ;-)
But, I am waiting to really see OS4 before even making up my

I decided to get the A1 based just on fact the A2K was getting too
old. That was a good call becasue the A2K fizzled out around the
time the A1 showedup. Lucky me -- and it order about a year in
advance! =:o
I recently installed OS3.9 and some programs. My favorite file
manager -- ClassAction 4.5 runs nice. Oh, and I intalled Thor 2.6;
found my key file stashed away on a CD; using Thor right now and
GoldEd v5.0. IBrowse
2.3 (reg) runs very solid in the current UAE Update (12-23-03). I
tried to get Amirc3.5 to run with no luck. I don't what's the
problem. :-/ I've been using KVirc in linux, but it has some
issues with play sounds on CTCP or DDC channel; it crashes.

YDL is Yellow Dog Linux ans so far only supported on Mac hardware
AFAIK,
It's a cool distro and very Redhat-like, so most stuff ports over if it doesn't
do something nasty to the hardware (the scanner backend SANE works
well, e.g.).

yes, real Amiga hardware is getting older and older and harder to keep going. When I had trouble with my A4000t a couple of months ago, I was seriously considering just using Amithlon or Amiga Forever and
forgetting about the hardware all together.
I recently installed OS3.9 and some programs. My favorite file...

hmm, more recent verions of Amiga Forever are REAL slow on my pc. I
wonder if that JIT has something to do with my problems? Might be worth

Don't know what you mean there. Since MAI is the developer of the Teron mobo in the A1 and Bill Meuller works on the YDL, YDL is the logical choice. I hear good things with YDL on the A1. :)

Saw a lot video card madness on my MLs. I'm using a plain jane
Radeon
7000 64Mb DDS. It isn't the hottest tech, but is A1 in the A1! =:o
It's all in the drivers that the distro handles. Debian comes up
short for the more up-to-date cards. BTW, ForeFront Technologies
will be doing ATI and Matrox drivers for OS4. Don't hear much
about NVidia stuff.

I finally hope so. If that's coming true, a PPC MOBO not from IBM (I currently have an RS/6000 here with dual CPUs and 8 GB RAM for a SAP
R/3 test server) will hit home.

YDL is a good thing, actually Redhat on PPC (though, IIRC, RedHat used
to have a PPC distro in the grand old days). But actually, if I
could run OS4 on a Mac....

The last time I looked at a RS/6000 was at a local company connected to
ten SUN micro-servers!. It's not exactly a home computer! =:o Are you still working at hospital?
Got to look at the YDL install.pdf. Refers to 'Disk Druid' for partition setup! If your in RedHat that works, but what if in I'm in Debian? Cfdisk is the part. tool for A1 linux.
Tried to get Amirc 3.5 to run, wouldn't work. IBrowse2.3 runs fine! So, what's the problem?

The AmigaOne, came with 2 CDs -- A1 Installer & Debian Linux 3.
Even those who just bought the mobo, got them. I got mine from
Compuquick in Ohio. All this sounds unusual. I've installed all
the software on the system. There's a Quickstartup Guide that
comes with the 2 CDs -- all Eyetech references.

In such cases, you have to draw on Linux experts. Usually, the
graphics card support of X11 is pretty good to at least get a
visible interface. Else, NVidia on intel is supported, I don't
know how this applies to non-intel machines though. But there are open-source Nvidia drivers around for X11 now, although they're
not really 3D accelerated.
Maybe hanging into IRC will get you some friendly help. You can
guess my moniker on IRC-net and where I hang around (except
#zaurus).....

Maybe asking too much, but it just seems to me he should have gotten a machine all ready to plug in and begin using!
But, my previous experience with Linux isn't too much different from
his. It was a couple of years ago though and I had hoped that things
were much improved by now.
As I recall I could at least get the desktop to appear but it was
'garbled'. That too was a case of no support for the video card. I did
manage to find an update but then couldn't figure out how to install
it.

Dave Haynie is working for Sizig, Inc. They're developing robotic

any part of AmigaOne. (Not that there's anything to blame.)

I've read that as well. It's not a bad thing, really, as this gives me
some real choice in the unlikely case I should be unhappy with AmigaOS.
One thing that could keep me from AmigaOS is quite a lot of server
software

AmigaOS
can do perfectly well in a Unix world, or if it must be, a Windows

You didn't quite get the meaning my sig, and that's not only to be understood
Amiga-wise. It's also in a more personal way. Controversial positions
extend beyond the Amiga world....
I thought it a bit strange that he apparently couldn't get the desktop interface to appear at all. I wondered if he might have made some 'bad' choices during installation. From what I gather, he is pretty new to
Linux too. No one else at that meeting was overly familiar with it
either. We do have a couple that I'm sure could have helped but that weren't there.
Sounds like good advice should I decide to take the plunge. :-)

Difficult. The default graphics drivers will work with any
hardware, although not really use it. Somehow like Amiga - you
always get the ECS or AGA chipset support.
Yes, hearing that makes it seem even stranger. And I do recall when I first tried installing Linux on my old computer, I had trouble as the graphics card in it wasn't supported. But still, I could at least see
the desktop. It just displayed rather oddly!
Haven't heard it he has it squared away now or not. Hopefully, OS 4
will be out before he has to fight with it too much longer. :-)
